With spring just around the corner, we bet you’re eager to get your RV or convertible back on the road! Keep reading for everything you need to know about removing a vehicle from storage with the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and your insurer.
When’s the best time?
It’s all up to the weather forecast, really.
Unlike for winter tires, there are no specific dates when it comes to taking your vehicle out of storage. Simply make sure to reinstate your insurance coverage before hitting the road.
When should I call my broker?
Call your broker a few days before taking your vehicle out of storage to give them enough time to reactivate your coverage.
Do I need to notify the SAAQ ahead of time?
No. You must notify the SAAQ on the same day you take your vehicle out of storage, whether that is:
- in person at a service outlet
- online
Must I check my vehicle’s condition before taking it out of storage?
When a vehicle has been sitting in storage for a long time, it's normal for it to be rusty, in every sense of the word.
It’s not impossible for parts to be damaged and need replacing, like:
- Batteries
- Tires
- Brakes
- Tanks
- The engine
To know for sure, we recommend that you make an appointment with your local mechanic for a full inspection and to make any necessary repairs.
Does my vehicle require a mechanical inspection before being taken out?
Only when it’s been in storage for more than 1 year.
The mechanical inspection must be performed by an SAAQ-authorized garage.
The mechanic will check the following for issues or defects:
- Steering
- Suspension
- Brakes
- Engine control system
- Wheels and tires
- Body
The mechanic will then give you an inspection report. Bring it with you to the SAAQ.
If your vehicle is roadworthy, they’ll put a sticker on it.
If not, you'll have to get it repaired before you can drive it.
How do I take my RV out of storage?
It’s no different than for any other vehicle. You’ll need to:
-
- Have it inspected by a mechanic
- Reinstate your insurance coverage for recreational and leisure vehicles
- Notify the SAAQ that you removed it from storage
What typical mistakes do people make?
The biggest one is forgetting to bring everything they need to the SAAQ:
- Licence plate number
- Driver's licence or other photo ID
- Mechanical inspection report, if applicable.
- Payment method (cash, debit card or cheque)
- A duly completed power of attorney form when someone is acting on their behalf (PDF)
Am I entitled to a storage credit?
Your broker will let you know if you qualify when you decide to remove your vehicle from storage.
